Kitchen Splashback Dilemma

The stone benchtops have gone into the kitchen. There is one on the island bench and one on the cooktop.

Now that the benchtops are in, I am still yet to make  a final decision on is the splashback. Originally I wanted Starphire White glass splashbacks to match in with my white kitchen theme, but now that the benchtops are in you can see they are not the same white as the cabinetry. That's because it's a natural product and while it's not hideously obvious, I can see it.

Which brings me to my next dilemma. I'm afraid putting a pure white splashback against the slightly off white benchtop will actually highlight the colour discrepancies rather than blend. That was also the advice of one of the suppliers I contacted as well. He said the benchtops will always look dirty against the pure white of the splashback.

The alternative is the old style clear glass that gives of that greeny/blue tinge, which I don't entirely hate, I just wonder whether it will suit the style of kitchen and stand out from the rest of the kitchen when it's supposed to blend.

What does everyone think?

  1. Agree it will highlight the 'discolouration'of the natural product. Why not add in a a splash of colour in or behind your starphire glass to act as a go-between?

    Not the best pic, but:

I am not up to splashbacks yet, and the last time I did a kitchen, the only choice was tiles, so i'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure you can get wallpapers/prints and paint-matched glass splashbacks now?

    1. Ohhh that's nice, is that like a light grey? The splashback guy did recommend a more "neutral" colour than pure white. Maybe I should get him to match the benchtop, which is Essastone "Bone White", but being a natural product more like an cream white?

      Thaaaanks!!! xx

  2. What about a mirrored splashback? Will be harder to keep clean but will tie in well. I prefer a white starfire splashback (even if it is slightly different to the benchtop and cupboards), rather than the clear green glass. Alternatively, make a feature of the splashback and bring in a colour! Or what about a tile? You could use those gorgeous timber plank look tiles....

    1. Yeah Kirty while I don't entirely hate the clear green glass, I don't love it either. I would love a feature splashback but what colour do you think that would have mass appeal if I sold it down the track?

Ohhh yes, those timber plank look tiles - http://karinashouseproject.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/bathroom-dilemmas.html - would look AMAZING!!!!

  3. Would you consider a shade of grey/silver?

By the way, our splashback is starphire/pure white BUT against our pure white cabinetry it doesn't look pure white. We were warned about this prior to going ahead with this colour. It is obviously a lot whiter than the clear glass, but not exactly pure white, if you know what I mean.

I think white is classic and will never date, that's why we went with it.

    1. Ohhhh B I love that! It looks awesome!! Lots of people have said that the slightly different shades of white add interest and it doesn't look so flat and stark. Silver or grey would work in my kitchen too though because of the brushed aluminium kickboards.

  5. I couldn’t find anything negative about. It’s definitely better than insisting on the original option and letting the benchtop look dirty. But if you really want something trendy, you can paint the walls first with striking black-white mural. That is if you’re willing to pull off the glass again. No matter what you decide on, I hope you would get good results. :]
